Banaras, or Varanasi,
holy city of temples, where, by the taking of a dip in the Ganges river, Hindus
believe one gets closer to salvation, one also gets to see a grand offering –
the Banarasi saree. Notwithstanding a flurry of traditional silks across the
country, the Banarasi Saree has always
held out as a unique fabric of traditional excellence.
In an awesome
display of grandeur, Banarasi Silk sarees have
always been exclusive and captivating. Finely woven, with rich brocades in
gold, silver zari, including fine designs and engravings, the relatively heavy
and opulent affair is part of every bride’s trousseau and a must-have finery
fabric for weddings and exclusive occasions in many Indian homes. The
speciality of the Banarasi sari lies in its
use of zari or rich gold and silver coloured thread work on motifs and
brocades.
The influence of Mughal designs is evident
from the awesome floral and leafy motifs known as ‘kalga’ and ‘bel’ and outer
border designs of upright leaves known as ‘Jhallar’. In addition the heavy gold
work on the brocades, the compact weaving of the base fabric, the small
detailing, metallic visual effects, the mesh pattern and the intricate
embroidery work are all contributive towards making the Banarasi silk sari, a rich
traditional offering and a national pride. The brocade is woven on a draw loom
through a special technique involving a supplementary weft. This ornamental
addition through the revolutionary special arrangement known as ‘jacquard’ has
expanded the horizons of pattern making on fabrics.
Four
to five centuries have passed and this tradition of fine weaving has neither
dimmed nor lost lustre. In fact the Banarasi Silk Sareehas
continued to remain as exceptional and finely sought as before. Over the years
additions and introductions within the weave have never seemed out of place.
Despite being woven in traditional style, the fusion elements have seamlessly
merged to become a part of its rich and dazzling heritage. There are a lot of Designer

Pochampally, in Telangana,
India, is well-known for its Pochampally brand
of sarees, the base fabric being cotton, silk or a blend of the two. The
exquisite finish of the saree comes through the dyeing and weaving of
pre-coloured threads which are dyed according to the Ikat or Ikkat technique.
The Ikkat technique involves applying
bindings which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns
and then dyeing the threads. These threads are then woven to produce the
desired pattern. When several colours are used, the dyeing process on the
threads is repeated for each of the colours chosen. Then the fabric is woven
with the multi-coloured threads into the pattern. Within the ikkat style of
dyeing are methods of single-ikkat and double-ikkat. Single ikkat has two
variants – warp ikkat where the warp threads are dyed after applying resists
according to pattern on the warp threads.
After that, only, is the weaving
done. In the weft ikkat it is the weft threads which are coloured by applying
resists before the dyeing and then weaving is done. In either case the dyeing
is done prior to the weaving so carefully that the pattern emerges as the weave
progresses. In the double ikkat method both the warp and weft threads are dyed
before weaving. Alternatively, in the tie-dye method it is quite the reverse of
the Ikkat style of dyeing. Here the threads are first woven and the resist
bindings then applied to the fabric before dyeing it.
The painstaking
efforts of the weavers in maintaining the purity of dyeing and weaving,
including the control and placement of threads during the weave contribute
largely to the complexity of the weave patterns and pleasing appearance of the
sarees. Colours that are employed for the dyeing of threads are fast and
well-chosen. No wonder the outcome of the Pochampally saree displays an
extraordinary ethnic skill that is hard to match. Current trends see Pochampally
silk saris with traditional designs, zari borders and elegant pallus
with pleasing designs and colourful prints, making it a must-buy for weddings,
festivals, traditional functions and even corporate wear.
Unnati Silks has
many exquisite creations in Pochampally silk sarees that one
can buy online. There are two special features that are notable. The stripes
pattern design on the pallus between which there are floral patterns in double
ikkat weaving. The main saree has attractive motifs in ikkat prints or ikkat
weaving and borders with patola weaving. Colours chosen are bright and vibrant
hues.
